WD40 and the Power of Pencils.
Wow. I can't believe it's been nearly two months since I showed the Red Van any posty attention. It's going to continue to be inconsistent for the foreseeable future, so the rust is really going to be a problem around here! Yipes!
Anyhoo, I'm still around - just very busy.
So a nice chap emailed me asking about animation and I found myself writing the following. I think it's kind of a logical conclusion to the whole "Should CG animators be able to draw?" debate:
This makes sense to me, seeing as my definition of "being able to draw" is different from the next persons...
Right?
I'll get my coat.

For an animator, it's all about bringing a character to life with the tools available. Many people swear that animators are nothing without strong drawing skills, but I would say strong visualisation skills are more important. The difference is minor, but it is there. If you can externalise a brilliant idea, then all is well. Drawing is a great skill to have whatever happens, but its the inherent quality of communication that you are learning to improve when you pick up that pencil.

It's been a while since I've posted here but I lurk alot awaiting posts from you!
You're an inspiration to all of us. Although I'm not sure if my interest lies in Animation after Uni, I still enjoy reading this blog and seeing your work.
I'm more of a 2D Artist, traditional, Photoshop - though I know Maya and Flash etc.
Do you have a non-animators section at Dreamworks? I'd be keen to see some of their work, if they have any blogs.
Cheers Kevan,
Liam.

Hey Liam!
Thanks for your kind words. I will apply to the artists to see if they have websites. They truly are an amazing group of people - I have never seen a bad drawing from them.
In the mean time, my cubie Mark Behm has just updated his website. He is both an animator and a truly gifted artist. Go and have a look!
