I'll post a couple images soon to illustrate what I'm talking about. But I find it helpful to think of the mouth as three different planes. Two for the top and one on the bottom. That's over-simplistic, but it works to rough it out. One thing that also helps to wrap your head around the forms is to model the mouth. Whether in 3D or with clay, it's helped me a ton.

That actually looks like me if the nose was more of a triangle projecting forward...oh, and the hair wasn't spiked =)
