AWN - ooof!

I got embroiled in a bit of a spat on the AWN forums. It was about the importance of drawing ability in animation. Go have a looky. What do you think?

If being able to draw amazing stuff was a requirement for being an animator, I would never have got to where I am now. You know, dear readers - you've seen my little doodles!

  • Wow. That was like watching a train wreck. I wanted to pull my eyes away, but couldn't. I had to read. every. last. word.

I think one of the problems with that discussion is that there was no agreed upon definition of "can draw" Can draw as in "like a Disney animator" or can draw "well enough to communicate a pose in a thumbnail"? They're two different levels of ability. I think both you and jschleifer draw pretty well and when you say you can't draw, you're comparing yourself to a higher standard.

Since I'm one of those people who can't draw (and aspire just to draw as well as you or Jason), I hesitate to even offer an opinion. However (you knew it was coming, didn't you?) I think you hit it on the head with respect to what's important in animation (weight, timing, poses, etc) and jschleifer made a really good point with the spending $100 analogy. Though maybe that's just 'cause I can't draw and that's what helps me sleep at night.

  • A heated debate like that HAS to happen. :-)
    Interesting read though.

  • Holy Crap! I thought you were kidding David, but you really can't take your eyes of it until the end. IMHO either you draw well or you don't, who cares?

I've got mates at studios around the world who'll be the first to admit that their drawing skills aren't up to scratch, but it hasn't stopped them from notching up a great IMDB score-card.

Shawn, Bobby and Carlos at AM say in almost every lecture, that you don't have to be a fantastic draftsperson, just being able to draw stick-figures so that you're able to get your ideas out of your head and onto paper is enough.

As Jack Nicholson once said, 'Why can't we all just...get along?'

    Laters dude,

  • Exactly, Gareth! Experience has taught me the visualisation is much more important than draughtsmanship. Any animator at any major studio will tell you that!

    I feel vindicated. :)

(Still wish I could draw well though)
