Animation Quality

Question: Can the general public tell the difference between quality ("expensive") animation and, um, not-quality animation?

Please say yes...

  • What makes you ask that?

  • Could it be... Hoodwinked? ;-)

  • I was listening to "ebert & roeper"'s review on their website, and was pleasently surprised when they said the animation didn't look good. Pity I didn't see the "for good animation, watch Polar Express 3D!" coming...

  • i really wish they could. but i think a lot of parents take their kids to movies simply for the fact that they're "cartoons." it's the sad fact, but that's my observation.

ps. what brings on this question?

  • Well, um, I'd love to feel like the artistry involved in the animation process is appreciated by its audience - they have paid money to see a film because they want to be entertained/moved, and know that the production values will be high.

I really hope that this is indeed the case, and that this will become evident over the next couple of years as the animated film industry continues to evolve.

  • It will be appreciated. But first the audience has to learn the difference between good and bad.

But what is worse: a great story and bad animation, or bad story and great animation?

I have enjoyed many live-action movies which had an interesting story, but the acting was ok to bad (Cube for instance). Same thing works for me with animated movies. If the story is good, I can see past the animation/acting.

  • I would say that the answer was no. The one example I can think of is all the TV animation I used to watch when I was a kid. I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. Stuff like Dangermouse and He-man. I saw a couple of those episodes a few months back and the animation was terrible but it still didnt stop me enjoying it when I was younger. In conclusion..........kids are stupid :)

    Only joking of course..

  • "But what is worse: a great story and bad animation, or bad story and great animation?"

a good example would be ff spirits w/in for the bad story great animation... or ghost in the shell 2... but both were still entertaining... for the other one, it'd be more appropriate to focus on the script writing rather than the story... examples would be aquateenhungerforce or family guy... im not saying the animation is bad, but if the script writing wasn't as good, then nobody would even care since the visuals aren't all that great to begin with...

    but the real question is:
Does Quality Animation make a Quality Movie??

because frankly Corpse Bride was gorgeous in every way, but was one of the most boring - undynamic - flat - lame - tame - draining films ever made..
    ControversiaL>?
